Oxiracetam or fastigial nucleus stimulation reduces cognitive injury at high altitude

Abstract: BackgroundCognitive impairment is common in people travelling to high altitude. Oxiracetam and electrical stimulation of cerebellar fastigial nucleus may have beneficial impacts. This study was to investigate the effects of preconditioning with Oxiracetam or fastigial nucleus stimulation (FNS) on cognitive decline following the ascension to high altitude.MethodsThe study was conducted on 60 male military voluntary members who were divided into control group, Oxiracetam group, and fastigial nucleus stimulation … Show more

“…Furthermore, HAH can also trigger neurocognitive dysfunctions such as spatial learning, memory and mood [10]. The treatment of HAHinduced neural injury has thus become a focus of attention in the field of high-altitude medicine [11,12].…”

“…Oxiracetam can accelerate the energy metabolism of brain tissue and improve the utilization rate of glucose via the activation the glycolysis pathway. Additionally, it can improve cognitive function and activities of daily life through the acceleration of the metabolism of glutamate receptor, resulting in the increase of postsynaptic potential amplitude and the improvement of the functional reconstruction of brain tissue (Hu et al., 2017). Ginkgo biloba extract is extracted from ginkgo biloba leaves, mainly composed of ginkgo flavonoid glycosides, which can improve the cerebral and peripheral blood circulation (Ahlemeyer & Krieglstein, 2003).…”

“…Oxiracetam has been reported to influence brain function at high altitude. Blood flow velocity measured by transcranial Doppler decreased in both anterior and posterior circulations following the administration of oxiracetam, attributed to vasodilation in the posterior and anterior circulation [163]. More importantly preconditioning with oxiracetam appeared to reduce the decline in cognitive function on ascent to altitude.…”
