Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Is Associated With Decreases in Cardiac Function Independent of Vascular Alterations

Abstract: Abstract-In contrast to the plethora of vasculopathies to which oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (ox-LDL) can be linked, there are no data linking ox-LDL to myocardial (dys)function in the community. We tested whether ox-LDL, a marker of oxidative stress, was linked to early cardiac structural and functional damage in the general population. The Asklepios Study is a random sample of 2524 male and female volunteers, comparable to the Belgian population between 35 and 55 years free from overt cardiov… Show more

“…Effects of oxLDL on cardiomyocytes are highlighted by findings that plasma oxLDL concentrations are associated with decreased cardiac function independent of vascular alterations [153]. Moreover, high oxLDL and high plasma levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are independent predictors of cardiac mortality [196].…”

“…Standard two-dimension volumetric methods were used to calculate ejection fraction (EF; Teichholz formula). Systolic (s¢), early (e¢) and late (a¢) diastolic mitral annulus velocities were recorded by pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging (TDI; sample volume located at the medial mitral annulus) (26). Isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) was measured using continuous wave Doppler recordings as the interval from the closure spike of the aortic valve to onset of mitral flow.…”

“…Oxidized LDL has an important role in the development of atherosclerotic processes and endothelial dysfunction. [14][15][16][17] Toikka et al 15 demonstrated that increased peripheral intimal-medial thickening and enhanced oxLDL are related to blood pressure elevations in young asymptomatic men. Their data provide evidence of increased in vivo oxLDL and subclinical atherosclerosis in men with borderline HT.…”
