Oxidative stress parameters and erythrocyte membrane adenosine triphosphatase activities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats administered aqueous preparation ofKalanchoe Pinnataleaves

Abstract: Background:Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that according to the World Health Organization affects more than 382 million people. The rise in diabetes mellitus coupled with the lack of an effective treatment has led many to investigate medicinal plants to identify a viable alternative. Objective:To evaluate red blood cell (RBC) membrane adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activities and antioxidant levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats administered aqueous preparation of Kalanchoe pinnata… Show more

“…Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder that is characterized by high levels of blood glucose with disturbances of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. [ 1 2 3 4 5 6 ] DM affects more than 371 million people worldwide and accounts for >4.8 million deaths each year. [ 7 8 ] In the case of México, the estimates indicates that the number of diabetic patients will increase from >2 million in 2002 to >132 million in 2030.…”

“…However, significant increases in catalase activity for all cell lines occurred when cells were treated with 400 μg/mL of K. pinnata . This study suggests that 400 μg/mL of K. pinnata may reduce oxidative damage by increasing catalase activity in human skeletal muscle cells compared to other treatment groups and may be beneficial in reducing oxidative stress in type II diabetes [ 40 ]. The increase in catalase activity in the K. pinnata -only treatment may be associated with the combined action of the bioactive compounds in the extract, as similarly reported in another study [ 10 ].…”

“…A administração do extrato aquoso de K. pinnata demonstrou uma diminuição no peso corporal, e melhorou a atividade hiperglicêmica. A diminuição da glicose no sangue pode ser um fator de redução de peroxidação lipídica e melhoria do perfil antioxidante (MENON et. al., 2016).…”
