Oxidative stress markers in preovulatory follicular fluid in humans

Abstract: Intensified peroxidation in the Graafian follicle may be a factor compromising the normal development of the oocyte. The aim of this study was to measure concentrations of three oxidative stress markers: conjugated dienes, lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, in preovulatory follicular fluids and sera of 145 women attending an in-vitro fertilization programme, and to correlate these concentrations with pregnancy outcome. Determinations were conducted either with or without an antio… Show more

“…Very low G6PD activity was found in the follicular liquid, which could be coming from dead cells or erythrocytes, since at this time the follicles are more vascularized. On its behalf, GSH could be playing an important antioxidant role in the follicular liquid, since it is responsible for safeguarding the integrity and viability not only of the oocyte but also of the follicular cells (Jozwik et al 1999). The decrease in GSH level in the follicular liquid could explain the increase in proteins modified by free radicals in the atretic follicles (Fig.…”

“…This may provide an explanation for impaired folliculogenesis in association with smoking (107). However, the developmental competence of oocytes retrieved during IVF is a multifactorial process that cannot be attributed to OS alone (108).…”

“…These results suggest that antioxidant FF HDL particle components may impact embryo quality during IVF. The presence of both oxidative stress markers [42] and antioxidant molecules and enzymes, especially lipophilic micronutrients [43,44], has been reported in developing human ovarian follicles, implying a dynamic biochemical environment. In our recent pilot work, we measured lipophilic micronutrients in FF and demonstrated their associations with embryo quality indicators [22], supporting a potential antioxidant role in the microenvironment of developing oocytes during IVF.…”
