“…In addition, there were not any significant correlations between PCBs and GST, a conjugating enzyme. However, significant correlations have been detected in C. mydas between a number of organic and inorganic contaminants and several oxidative stress enzymes, including GST, catalase (CAT), super-oxide dismutase (SOD), as well as an indicator of lipid peroxidation measured using thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) (Labrada-Martagón et al, 2011). The difference in results between these two publications could be due to a larger sample size utilised by Labrada-Martagón et al (2011).…”

“…Four publications investigated biomarkers of oxidative stress (Valdivia et al, 2007;Richardson et al, 2009;Richardson et al, 2010;Labrada-Martagón et al, 2011); however, only two of these publications correlated the biomarkers with contaminant levels (Richardson et al, 2010;Labrada-Martagón et al, 2011). Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was the only enzyme investigated in all four oxidative stress publications.…”

“…Environmental xenobiotics may bioaccumulate and be biomagnified in C. mydas according to their diet, age, body length, geographical area and also the tissue that is analyzed (GAUS et al, 2012;KELLER, 2013). Age, body length, diet and chemical pollutant levels have been associated with ontogenetic shifts in C. mydas, from greater levels in hatchlings to early juveniles that have an omnivorous diet, than late juveniles and adults that have a primarily herbivorous diet, and consequently a lower contaminant intake (LABRADA-MARTAGÓN et al, 2011;SILVA et al, 2016). Additionally, chemical levels may vary according to the geographical area, natural enrichment of trace elements and feeding preferences, and also as a result of overlapping anthropogenic activities and residence patterns of C. mydas (LABRADA-MARTAGÓN et al, 2011;BEZERRA et al, 2015).…”
