Oxidative stress and fertility: incorrect assumptions and ineffective solutions?

Abstract: One of the most important concerns in assisted reproduction (ART), and in particular ICSI, is the quality of sperm DNA. Oxidative stress is one of the major causes of damage to DNA and attempting to reduce generation of DNA damage related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) through consumption of antioxidants is often tempting. However, current antioxidant treatments, given irrespectively of clinically quantified deficiencies, are poorly efficient, potentially detrimental and over-exposure is risky. Here we discu… Show more

“…We found that semen quality can be significantly increased with the use of stimulus mares in oestrus. The enhanced semen quality may then provide two benefits: (i) it may increase success rates of instrumental fertilization, and (ii) it may reduce the mutational load that is inflicted by oxidative stress on sperm49. Therefore, the use of oestrous stimulus mares during semen collection can have beneficial long-term consequences on the genetics of horse breeds.…”

“…It should be also considered that the antioxidants work together as integrated antioxidative defence network system. Current antioxidant treatments, given irrespectively of clinically quantified deficiencies, may be potentially detrimental and overexposure to them is risky [37].…”

“…It is possible that the lower values of selenium contained in the Menevit sup-plement may be responsible for an increase in sperm protamination relatively insufficient to improve FR as compared with those contained in the Fertimax2 medication (50 µg). It has been postulated, in point of fact, that within and beyond optimum selenium concentrations that range between 50 and 70 µg/ml, the quality of the spermatozoon is altered [45].…”
