Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) is a potential carcinogenic/mutagenic agent although it is used in many areas including medical industries and cosmetics. Boron (as boric acid and borax) has also well-described biological effects and therapeutic benefits. In a previous study, sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) and micronuclei (MN) rates were assessed in control and TiO(2)-treated (1, 2, 3, 5, 7.5 and 10 microm) human whole blood cultures. The results showed that the rates of SCE (at 2, 3, 5, 7.5 and 10 microm) and MN (at 5, 7.5 and 10 microm) formation in peripheral lymphocytes were increased significantly by TiO(2) compared with the controls. The present study also investigated the genetic effects of boric acid and borax (2.5, 5 and 10 microm) on cultures with and without TiO(2) addition. No significant increase in SCE and MN frequencies were observed at all concentrations of boron compounds. However, TiO(2)-induced SCE and MN could be reduced significantly by the presence of boric acid and borax. In conclusion, this study indicated for the first time that boric acid and borax led to an increased resistance of DNA to damage induced by TiO(2).

Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes have increased levels of oxidative stress and inflammation. A high fruit and vegetable intake may be beneficial. Objective: To study whether fruit and vegetable intake and levels of plasma antioxidants relate to markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in a group of patients with type 2 diabetes. Further, to investigate whether plasma antioxidants are good biomarkers for intake of fruit and vegetables. Design: Patients with type 2 diabetes were studied. Their dietary intake and levels of plasma antioxidants, and markers of oxidative stress and inflammation were analysed. Results: Fruit and vegetable intake was inversely related to oxidative stress. Plasma carotenoids were negatively correlated with inflammation. The plasma levels of a-carotene and b-carotene showed strongly positive associations with fruit and vegetable intake. Conclusions:The results suggest that fruit and vegetable intake may decrease oxidative stress and inflammation in this group of patients. An increased intake of fruit and vegetables can therefore be beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes, since these patients are documented to have raised oxidative stress and inflammation. The study support the usefulness of plasma a-carotene and b-carotene as biomarkers for fruit and vegetable intake.

Resumen: Se analiza el desequilibrio en el tratamiento de dos temas que atañen a la conservación de la integridad del genoma humano: las tecnologías de manipulación genética y el deterioro genómico provocado por la contaminación ambiental. Las carencias educativas, la falta de información asentada en los hechos y un manejo sensacionalista en los medios, entre otros factores, desajustan las agendas mediáticas con las necesidades públicas, lo que desemboca en una falta de conciencia ciudadana acerca de las verdaderas amenazas a las que está expuesto el material genético y los riesgos de salud que ello implica.Palabras clave: genotóxico, manipulación genética, deterioro genómico, bioética, toxicología ambiental, justicia ambiental GENOME DAMAGE AND GENETIC MANIPULATION. UNBALANCE IN PUBLIC POLICIES PRIORITYAbstract: Unbalance in the treatment of two topics related to the conservation of the human genome integrity is analyzed here: the technologies for genetic manipulation and genome damage due to environmental pollution.
