Oxidative DNA damage levels and catalase activity in the clam Ruditapes decussatus as pollution biomarkers of Tunisian marine environment

Abstract: Levels of the oxidative DNA damage 7, 8-dihydro-8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) and catalase (CAT) activity were measured in the digestive gland and gills of clams Ruditapes decussatus, related to the presence of pollutants along Tunisian marine environment. Increased levels of CAT were observed in tissues of clams from all the sites studied, compared to control values, and elevated 8-oxodG levels were observed at specific sites. Results obtained in this work indicate that the measurement of 8-oxodG levels a… Show more

“…Catalase is one of the first enzymes proposed as an effective biomarker for oxidative stress and involved in the hydrolysis of hydrogen peroxide (Jebali et al, 2007). In the present study, maximum catalytic activity was observed in the mantle tissue followed by the foot, abductor muscle, gonads and gills in control.…”

“…An increase of the enzyme activity with copper concentrations was reported by Roméo et al [48] in transplanted mussels from clean water to stations of Nice and Cannes bays. Jebali et al [49] noted in clam Ruditapes decussatus a higher CAT activity in the gills and the digestive glands, in relation to pollutants presence.…”

“…Decreased CAT activity has also been re ported in mice dwelling at sites contaminated by toxic metals (Montes-Nieto et al 2007). It is noteworthy, however, that other investigators have found higher CAT activity in clams and worms from BIZ and from sites near Sfax than at control sites (Jebali et al 2007, Banni et al 2009b, Bouraoui et al 2010.…”

“…Cd from phosphate plants is one of the main contaminants in the Gabès area , SmaouiDamak et al 2003, Machreki-Ajmi et al 2008. Samples were collected from: (1) Bizerte (BIZ) Lagoon, and (2) Gargour (GAR), in Gabès Gulf, both of which areas receive urban, industrial and agricultural pollution, and (3) Teboulba (TEB), with no main contamination sources and considered a reference site in many field studies (Banni et al 2007, Jebali et al 2007, Bouraoui et al 2010.…”
