Oxidative Damage Markers Are Significantly Associated with the Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness after Controlling for Conventional Risk Factors of Atherosclerosis in Men

Abstract: BackgroundThis study aimed to assess the association between oxidative damage markers and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) after controlling for conventional risk factors of atherosclerosis in multiple logistic regression models. Methods and FindingsFifty-one case male participants (CIMT ≥ 0.9 mm) were enrolled during their visits to Korean Genomic Rural Cohort Study of Wonju centers between May 1 and August 31, 2011, along with 51 control participants (CIMT < 0.9 mm) selected using frequency matchi… Show more

“…In a patient with diabetes, ROS production, MDA level, and DNA damages are elevated, while the DNA repair system efficacy is reduced (Lee & Chan, 2015;Bhutia et al, 2011). Also, there is a causal link between MDA and 8-OHDG elevated levels in a variety of diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disorders (Voulgaridou et al, 2011;Yoon et al, 2015). Thus, any therapeutic interventions that target the underlying causes for such complications are considered as appropriate approaches to improve the overall quality of life in these patients.…”

“…The levels of MDA and protein carbonyls were significantly higher in CAD cases as compared to without CAD cases. In a recent study by Yoon et al [21] showed that oxidative stress markers like MDA, 8-hydroxy-2 0 -deoxyquuanosine (8-OHdG) and 8-iso-prostaglandin F2a (Isoprostane) are independently associated with the increase in CIMT in men even after adjusting the cardiovascular risk factors like age, alcohol consumption, low density lipoprotein, BMI, smoking history, and metabolic syndrome. This indicates the role oxidative stress in the increase in CIMT.…”

“…The influence of age was found in patients with various cardiovascular risk factors, including diabetes [20]. In a recent study, it was demonstrated that oxidative stress markers are independently associated with the increase in CIMT even after adjusting the conventional risk factors in men [21]. Hence the present study was carried out to investigate the role of oxidative stress markers and CIMT in elderly patients with cardiovascular risk factors without CAD and also in elderly patients with CAD.…”

“…Furthermore, increased urinary excretion of 8-iso-PG F2α was also associated with increased carotid artery IMT. 21) In contrast, several clinical studies have demonstrated correlations between antioxidant Vol 57 No 2 OXIDATIVE STRESS AND CAROTID ATHEROSCLEROSIS markers and carotid artery IMT: SOD activity in diabetic patients, 18) catalase activity in chronic hemodialysis 17) and type 2 diabetic patients, 18) and serum TAS in workers occupationally exposed to mercury vapor 22) were negatively correlated with carotid artery IMT.…”
