Oxidative balance score and oxidative stress biomarkers in a study of Whites, African Americans, and African immigrants

Abstract: Context Oxidative balance score (OBS) is a composite measure of multiple pro- and antioxidant exposures. Objective To investigate associations of OBS with F2-isoprostanes (FIP), mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA), and fluorescent oxidative products (FOP), and assess inter-relationships among the biomarkers. Methods In a cross-sectional study, associations of a thirteen-component OBS with biomarker levels were assessed using multivariable regression models. Results Association of OBS with FIP, but not … Show more

“…Concentrations of inflammation markers were comparable to those in the pilot trial, which had a much shorter gap between sample collection and laboratory measurement (21). Most importantly, associations of these biomarkers at baseline with sex, body measurements, and an oxidative balance score were consistent with previous findings from our group (42,45,46) and other groups (e.g., refs. [47][48][49], supporting the validity of our biomarker measurements.…”

“…The methods of the study have been described in detail elsewhere. 19 Briefly, the study included individuals aged 25–74 years who self-identified as Non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), African Americans (AA) or West African Immigrants (WAI) and who were residents of Georgia. NHW and AA subjects were selected from among 800 participants in a previously completed feasibility phase of the Georgia Cohort Study.…”

“…The OBS was estimated using a priori selected 13 pro-oxidant and antioxidant components according to our previous study 19 and those of others 27,28 as listed in Table 1. The score combined plasma micronutrient measurements and lifestyle behaviors.…”
