INTRODUÇÃOCélula a combustível é um dispositivo que converte eletroquimicamente combustíveis químicos em eletricidade; é, essencialmente, uma bateria que não para de fornecer corrente elétrica por causa da contínua alimentação externa de combustível. Em outras palavras, é uma bateria na qual os dois eletrodos não são consumidos durante a descarga, mas agem simplesmente como locais para a reação entre combustível e oxidante [1]. Células a combustível convertem energia química diretamente em energia elétrica com eficiência termodinâmica não limitada pelo ciclo de Carnot [2,3]. Essa vantagem das células a combustível depende, entretanto, de como os combustíveis que serão utilizados podem ser reformados para produzir hidrogênio e dióxido de carbono [4]. Toda célula a combustível é composta de uma seqüência de unidades, cada uma com quatro componentes: o eletrólito, o eletrodo para o ar (ar é o oxidante), o eletrodo para o combustível (o mais comum é o hidrogênio), e o interconector.Muitos tipos de células a combustível foram desenvolvidos, sendo as células classificadas geralmente de acordo com o tipo de eletrólito. Os cinco principais tipos são:1-célula a combustível de ácido fosfórico, operacional a 180 o C; 2-célula a combustível de membrana trocadora de prótons, ou célula a combustível de eletrólito de membrana polimérica, operacional na faixa de temperatura 60-80 o C; 3-célula a combustível de eletrólito alcalino, operacional a temperaturas relativamente baixas (80 o C). Tem sido usada no ônibus espacial como principal fonte de energia. Embora tenha operado confiável e eficientemente em missões espaciais por mais de 40 anos, não tem sido usada para outras finalidades, principalmente por causa do alto custo ResumoA partir da definição de células a combustível, é feita uma introdução sucinta dos tipos de células e dos materiais cerâmicos que são empregados em projeto e fabricação destes dispositivos geradores de energia elétrica. Tomando por base a ampla literatura científica disponível em publicações periódicas internacionais indexadas e arbitradas, bem como patentes, são relatados com detalhes os materiais cerâmicos com comportamento elétrico adequado para uso como eletrólitos, anodos, catodos, interconectores e selantes, que são os componentes básicos de células a combustível de óxidos sólidos. Por fim, é feita uma avaliação do estado da arte na pesquisa e desenvolvimento de materiais cerâmicos para uso em células a combustível de óxidos sólidos. In this paper we report the successful incorporation of borate and phosphate into CaMnO 3 and borate into La 1Ày Sr y MnO 3Àd . For CaMnO 3 , an increase in the electronic conductivity was observed, which can be correlated with electron doping due to the oxyanion doping favoring the introduction of oxide ion vacancies (as well as the higher valence of P 5+ compared to Mn 4+ in the case of phosphate doping). The highest conductivity at 800 C was observed for CaMn 0.95 P 0.05 O 3Àd , 43.0 S cm À1 , in comparison with 7.6 S cm À1 for undoped CaMnO 3 at the same temperature. For La 1Ày Sr y MnO 3Àd the conductivity suffers a decrease for all compositions on borate doping, attributed to a reduction in the hole (Mn 4+ ) concentration. In order to investigate the potential of these materials as SOFC cathodes, the chemical compatibility with Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 1.95 (CGO10) has also been investigated. For the calcium manganites, the lowest temperature examined without reaction was 900 C, with minor amounts of Ca 4 Mn 3 O 10 observed at 1000 C. Composites of these cathode materials with 50% CGO10 were examined on dense CGO10 pellets and the area specific resistances (ASR) in symmetrical cells were determined. The ASR values, at 800 C, were 1.50, 0.37 and 0.30 U$cm 2 for CaMnO 3 , CaMn 0.95 B 0.05 O 3Àd and CaMn 0.95 P 0.05 O 3Àd , respectively. For the lanthanum strontium manganites, the B-doped compositions showed an improvement in the ASR values with respect to the parent compounds, despite the lower electronic conductivity. This may be due to an increase in ionic conductivity due to borate incorporation leading to the formation of oxide ion vacancies. Thus these preliminary results show that oxyanion doping has a beneficial effect on the performance of perovskite manganite cathode materials, and suggests that this doping strategy warrants further investigation in other perovskite cathode systems.

was obtained using citrate-nitrate method. It was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis that the compounds have rhombohedral (space group R3C) or orthorhombic (space group Pbnm) structure, depending on the composition. Single-phase compounds are synthesized at у = 0.1; 0.2. The investigation using scanning electron microscope showed that the grain sizes for the samples sintered using different techniques are close to each other because of the high calcination temperature. For the sample with orthorhombic structure the phase transition into rhombohedral one was found around 390 °С by means of dilatometry.
