Oxacillin Resistance and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profile of Staphylococcussaprophyticus and Other Staphylococci Isolated from Patients with Urinary Tract Infection

Abstract: Background:Staphylococcus saprophyticus is the second most frequent community-acquired causative agent of urinary tract infection (UTI). The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility profile and resistance detection in Staphylococcus species. isolated from patients with UTI. Materials and Methods: The isolates were investigated using the disk diffusion method, Vitek I system, E-test®, and detection of the mecA gene. Results: Most isolates (76.2%) were resistant to oxacillin by the disk diffusi… Show more

“…In addition, 30.1% of the isolates were resistant to erythromycin, 23.0% to gentamicin, and 15.3% to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. Our results on oxacillin resistance are consistent with those reported by Ferreira et al [ 17 ]. Oxacillin resistance was also observed in the single S. hominis isolate of the present study and in one of the three S. warneri isolates.…”

“…Although 3 S. epidermidis strains were linezolid susceptible (MIC: 2-4 mg/l), they were positive for the presence of the C2534T mutation. In a study by Ferreira et al [14] among 101 staphylococci phenotypically tested, the range of linezolid MIC was 0.5-4 mg/l, but no molecular analysis was performed. In another study, linezolid nonsusceptibility among staphylococci was associated with the G2576T mutation in 23S rDNA, whereas 5 isolates carried the mobile cfr element [15].…”

“…is not only because of its pathogenicity but these species show high resistance in the treatment of UTIs (Ferreira et al, 2012;Lunacek et al, 2014). Hence, considering the situation of this pathogenic agents and evaluating its risk factors are of great importance.…”
