OXA beta-lactamase-mediated carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii

Abstract: blaOXA-23 like and bla OXA 51 like genes are the most common types of OXA carbapenamases while the blaVIM type is the most common type of metallo-beta-lactamase contributing to carbapenem resistance in clinical isolates of A. baumannii. The coproduction of OXA and metallo-beta-lactamases is not an uncommon phenomenon in A. baumannii.

“…This study showed NDM as the predominant MBL gene. However, studies by Saranathan et al and Amudhan et al showed IMP-like and VIM-like as the prevalent MBL genes [ 19 , 20 ]. Of the 103 isolates tested, 52 (50%) were positive for 1 of the ESBL genes such as PER, TEM and SHV.…”

“…[2] Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae cause difficult-to-treat infections usually characterized by high mortality. [3], [4] Furthermore, high prevalence of infections caused by carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter baumannii [5], [6], [7] and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , [6], [8] as well as of infections caused by ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae has been observed in India [9], [10], [11].…”
