Overview on 5G Radio Frequency Energy Harvesting

Abstract: The current industrial landscape is becoming increasingly aware of the need to optimize energy use and management for all domains, including telecommunications. Among others, RF Energy Harvesting is a promising technique for 5G systems as an alternative to traditional energy supply sources. This paper presents 5G landscape and ecosystem. It positions RF-Energy Harvesting in 5G context and reviews its techniques. It also considers constraints and research trends for different aspects needed to make RF energy ha… Show more

“…In an ambient environment in the RF spectrum, transmitters radiate AM/FM radio signals, [115,116] TV/DTV signals, [117,118] GSM signals on cell phones, [114] Wi-Fi signals, [119,120] LTE and 4G signal [121] up to the latest 5G signal. [23,122] Rectennas can harvest those signals to power up simple devices. [123][124][125] Ambient RF is usually supplied by a fixed source, such as a base transceiver station, delivering stable radiation over time.…”

“…A reasonable motivation could be that such communication standards generally require a vaster amount of energy in comparison with non-cellular technologies due to the fact that the former ones customarily offer higher performances with respect to the latter ones. However, some instances of harvesters for nodes communicating embracing cellular technologies are presented in [89], concerning NB-IoT, and in [90], regarding 5G.…”
