Overview of the “Ionic Liquids meet Biomolecules” session at the 19th international IUPAB and 11th EBSA congress

Abstract: Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) (Welton 1999) are a vast class of ionic systems consisting of an organic cation and either an organic or inorganic anion, whose melting temperature falls below the conventional limit of 100°C, making these compounds liquid at or near room temperature. The thermal and chemical stability of these systems make them the basis of what is called Bgreen chemistry^ (Earle and Seddon 2000). Several biochemical studies, however, have highlighted their potential toxicity to organisms,… Show more

“…The removal of excess solvent post-extraction is done by distillation, which increases the complexity in solvent regeneration . Furthermore, the inherent properties of these solvents render them harmful to both the environment and the target metabolite . Therefore, usage and disposal of these organic solvents have great influence on the eco-system.…”

“…39 Furthermore, the inherent properties of these solvents render them harmful to both the environment and the target metabolite. 40 Therefore, usage and disposal of these organic solvents have great influence on the eco-system. To circumvent their usage, new-age solvents that are environmentally benign are being synthesized and applied in extraction processes.…”

“…The knowledge of such mechanisms is very important to facilitate and tune the development of applications of ILs in bio-nanotechnology and bio-nanomedicine. In this context, several biophysical studies on the interaction between ILs and biomolecules/biosystems have been performed in the last 10 years showing, for example, the ability of some ILs to stabilize proteins and enzymes, to control protein amyloidogenesis, to diffuse into biomembranes, and to bioprocess and store DNA at room temperature (Benedetto and Ballone 2016a , b ; Benedetto and Galla 2017 , 2018 ). These biophysics studies of ILs highlighted their remarkable interactions with bio-molecules, biosystems, and biomembranes in particular, pointing to promising applications in pharmacology, biomedicine, and bio-nanotechnology (Passos et al 2016 ; Egorova et al 2017 ; Forero-Martinez et al 2022 ).…”

“…In addition, researchers prefer the benefits of alternative solvents over conventional organic solvents to obtain the ultimate extract at specific and identical times. As such, alternative solvents that are not only ecological but also produce good quality and safe extracts have been developed [22]. Based on the combination of essential metabolites, recently developed DESs comprise sugar alcohols, sugars, amino acids and natural acids.…”
