Overview of Meta-Analyses on Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of 5 meta-analyses of early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) for young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) published in 2009 and 2010. There were many differences between meta-analyses, leading to different estimates of effect and overall conclusions. The weighted mean effect sizes across meta-analyses for IQ and adaptive behavior ranged from g = .38-1.19 and g = .30-1.09, respectively. Four of five meta-analyses concluded EIBI was an effective intervention st… Show more

“…It leads to early educational interventions, which have been linked to better long-term prognoses (Lord 1995), and it allows early treatment entry, which is associated with the best treatment outcomes, specifically during childhood (Lord 1995;Reichow 2012). Furthermore, it enables the coordination and early streamlining of family centered care.…”

“…This has emerged both at the programmatic level (Rogers, Estes, Lord, Vismara, Winter, Fitzpatrick, et al, 2012), as well as relative to specifi c areas of intervention like social skills (Reichow & Volkmar, 2010). There are also many other systematic reviews, including multiple meta-analyses that have been recently published highlighting the emergence of evidence-based comprehensive programs for young children with autism (e.g., Reichow, 2012;Reichow, Barton, Boyd, & Hume, 2012;Rogers & Vismara, 2008). The recent advent of new approaches to assessing treatment outcome (including more basic measures of brain processing) is an exciting development (Rogers et al, 2012).…”

“…Diversos estudos destacam a intervenção precoce como fator fundamental para a melhora do quadro clínico do autismo, gerando ganhos significativos e duradouros no desenvolvimento da criança (Howlin, Magiati & Charman 2009;Reichow, 2011). Devido à plasticidade cerebral, a precocidade do início da intervenção desempenha papel importante, potencializando os efeitos positivos da mesma.…”
