Overview of cancer incidence and mortality among people living with HIV/AIDS in British Columbia, Canada: Implications for HAART use and NADM development

Abstract: BackgroundThe objective of this study is to evaluate the incidence of non-AIDS defining malignancies (NADMs) among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in British Columbia, focusing on clinical correlates, highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) use, and survival, in order to elucidate mechanisms for NADM development.MethodsA retrospective population based analysis was carried out for individuals with HIV/AIDS that began their treatment between 1996 and 2008.ResultsThere were 145 (2.95%) NADMs and 123 (2.5… Show more

“…In a study performed in British Columbia, HIV subjects had an SIR of 2.05 for NADCs development as compared to the general population. During the observation period (1996-2008), 2.95% of patients developed an NADC [26].…”

“…The incidence of ADMs and NADMs among PLHIV has been well‐studied but there is a lack of information on survival outcomes after specific cancer diagnoses. Few studies have analysed 5‐year survival after specific cancer diagnoses among PLHIV and they were limited to prognosis after diagnosis of ADMs, or included untreated PLHIV who have worse prognosis than those on ART .…”

“…6 Improvements treatment of HIV have resulted in PLHIV living longer, 7 increasing the risk of NADMs that are associated with age in the general population. 8 The incidence of ADMs and NADMs among PLHIV has been well-studied 2,[9][10][11] but there is a lack of information on survival outcomes after specific cancer diagnoses. Few studies have analysed 5-year survival after specific cancer diagnoses among PLHIV [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] and they were limited to prognosis after diagnosis of ADMs, 12,19 or included untreated PLHIV 14,15 who have worse prognosis than those on ART.…”

“…In the modern HAART era, HIV infection is considered a chronic disease that causes cancers, thus bringing new health challenges to HIV‐infected patients. Among the non‐AIDS‐defining cancers, lung cancer is the most common malignancy; this phenomenon may be explained by several risk factors, such as smoking, immunosuppression and anti‐retroviral agent‐induced DNA damage . Lung cancer patients with HIV infection have poorer survival rates and prognoses compared with their HIV‐uninfected counterparts, although the molecular mechanism is not clear …”
