Overgeneral autobiographical memory effect in older depressed adults

Abstract: The overgeneral effect appeared for older adults with depression due to the higher presence of extended memories (events lasting for more than 24 h) rather than categoric retrievals (summary of repeated events). The strong correlation between specific memories and Life Satisfaction among non-depressed older adults suggests its potential role as a protective factor for depression.

“…In all, 45 studies reported that they excluded individuals with cognitive impairment or a diagnosis of dementia, of which 30 were cross-sectional studies (58.8%) [11,12,17,19,24,30,31,32,33,37,58,59,60,62,63,64,65,66,69,72,73,75,76,77,78,88,89,90,91,92] and 15 were longitudinal studies (68.2%) [2,3,4,8,10,18,20,21,25,26,34,45,46,48,49]. Cognitive function was equally assessed in clinical studies (n = 11) and in community-based studies (n = 12).…”

“…Cognitive function was equally assessed in clinical studies (n = 11) and in community-based studies (n = 12). The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used in 23 studies [2,8,10,12,17,19,20,25,26,31,32,33,37,48,58,62,66,69,73,78,88,89,90] for exclusion purposes. To exclude participants, the cutoff score for the MMSE varied considerably between the studies, i.e.…”

“…Thus, negative mood may activate trait rumination and the negative consequences of rumination on the amount of autobiographical recall can then be observed. In non-depressed older adults, specific autobiographical memory was positively associated with life satisfaction (Latorre et al, 2013) and negatively with hopelessness (Ricarte et al, 2011). Moreover, older adults present a preference for remembering positively rather than negatively valenced information.…”

“…O que se tem verificado é que, relativamente à especificidade das memórias autobiográficas evocadas, os idosos com sintomatologia depressiva e depressão evocam em média menos memórias autobiográficas específicas em comparação com os idosos sem sintomatologia depressiva e sem depressão (Barata & Afonso, 2012;Birch & Davidson, 2007;Latorre et al, 2013;Ricarte et al, 2011).…”
