Overexpression of S100A4 is closely associated with the progression and prognosis of gastric cancer in young patients

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation of S100A4 expression with the progression, prognosis and clinical pathology of gastric cancer (GC) in young pateints. A total of 85 tumor tissues with corresponding adjacent normal tissues and 62 non-metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) with corresponding metastatic LNs were obtained from young GC patients (<40 years old) who underwent surgery between January 2001 and December 2006. The expression of S100A4 was detected by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Differen… Show more

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that S100A4 expression is correlated with a poor prognosis in cancer patients (8,14,15). S100A4 is involved in tumor metastasis by affecting cell growth, invasion and motility (16,17).…”

“…It has been associated with numerous biological functions, for example, protection of cells from proapoptotic stimuli and stimulation of neurite outgrowth (4,5). Overexpression of S100A4 has been reported in several types of cancer and is correlated with poor patient prognosis (6)(7)(8). Previous studies suggested that S100A4 acts as a potential marker of metastasis by regulating cell growth, motility and invasion (9,10).…”

“…However, the early diagnosis of gastric cancer is difficult and the majority of cases have progressed to a moderate or advanced stage prior to diagnostic confirmation, therefore, the postoperative 5-year survival rate of gastric cancer remains low at ~20-30%. Furthermore, elderly patients are frequently unable to tolerate surgery (4,5). In recent years, improvements to various resection methods, as well as chemotherapeutic and radiotherapeutic plans has had little effect (3).…”

“…In China, there are approximately 160,000 deaths from gastric cancer annually (Chen et al, 2004). A number of studies have reported the relationship between S100A4 expression and the prognosis of gastric cancer (Yonemura et al, 2000;Yu et al, 2006;Huang et al, 2008;Wang et al, 2010;Feng et al, 2011;Stein et al, 2011;Zhao et al, 2013;Li et al, 2013) However, the association of S100A4 with gastric prognosis remains unclear.…”

“…Subsequent studies identified 16 members of this family, based on amino acid sequence homology and similar structural properties (Schafer and Heizmann, 1996). S100A4 is highly expressed in many cancers (Kikuchi et al, 2006;Ai et al, 2008;Kwak et al, 2010) and its presence predicts a poor outcome, such as in pancreatic cancer, (Ai et al 2008), colorectal cancer (Kwak et al, 2010), ovarian carcinoma (Kikuchi et al, 2006), bladder carcinoma (Yao et al 2007), esophageal carcinoma (Ji et al, 2004), and gastric carcinoma (Yonemura et al, 2000;Yu et al, 2006;Huang et al, 2008;Feng et al, 2011;Wang et al, 2010;Stein et al, 2011;Zhao et al, 2013;Li et al, 2013). However, the prognostic value of S100A4 in patients with gastric cancer is still controversial.…”
