The acquisition and tracking strategies of the BeiDou navigation satellite signals are affected by the modulation of Neumann-Hoffman code (NH code), which increases the complexity of receiver baseband signal processing. Based on the analysis of probability statistics of the NH code, a special sequence of incoming signals is proposed to evade the bit transitions caused by the NH code, and an NH Code Evasion and Stripping method (NCES) based on the NH-pre-modulated code is proposed. The NCES can be applied in both 20-bit NH code and 10-bit NH code. The fine acquisition eliminates the impact of NH code on the traditional tracking loop. These methods were verified with a BeiDou PC-based software-defined receiver using the actual sampled signals. Compared with other acquisition schemes which try to determine or ignore the NH code phase, the NCES needs fewer incoming signals and the actual runtime is greatly reduced without sacrificing much time to search in the secondary code dimension, and the success rate of acquisition is effectively improved. An extension of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based parallel code-phase search acquisition gives the NCES an advantage in engineering applications. 2. BeiDou. 3. Software-defined receiver. 4. The secondary modulation with the Neumann-Hoffman code increases the possibility of bit sign transition. Unlike other GNSS signals, there is no pilot component for synchronization in BeiDou B1/B3 signals, which increases the complexity in acquisition. A previous study has shown that the delay and multiplication (DAM) method is able to eliminate the bit sign transition problem, but it only applies to pretty strong signals. In this paper, a DAM-based BeiDou signal acquisition approach, called variable length data accumulation (VLDA), is proposed to acquire weak satellite signals. Firstly, the performance of DAM method versus the different delays is analyzed. The DAM operation not only eliminates bit sign transition, but it also increases noise power. Secondly, long-term signal is periodically accumulated to improve signal intensity in order to acquire weak signals. While considering the Doppler frequency shift of ranging codes, the signal length must be compensated before accumulating long-term signal. Finally, the fast-Fourier-transform based parallel code phase algorithm are used for acquisition. The simulation results indicate that the proposed VLDA method has better acquisition sensitivity than traditional non-coherent integration method under the same calculation amount. The VLDA method only requires approximately 27.5% of calculations to achieve the same acquisition sensitivity (35 dBHz). What is more, the actual experimental results verify the feasibility of the VLDA method. It can be concluded that the proposed approach is an effective and feasible method for solving the bit sign transition problem.

Oil spills, which can cause severe immediate and long-term harm to marine ecological environments for decades after the initial accident, require rapid and accurate monitoring. Currently, optical and radar satellite images are used to monitor oil spills; however, remote sensing generally needs a long revisit period. Global Navigation Satellite System reflected signals (GNSS-R) can provide all-weather and all-day ocean monitoring and is therefore more suitable for oil spill monitoring. To assess the feasibility of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System reflected signals (BeiDou-R) in detecting oil slicks, a BeiDou-R coastal simulated experiment is performed in this study on the oil slick distribution of an oil pipeline explosion accident. We set up an observation point and selected observation satellites, and a delay-Doppler map (DDM) of an oil-slicked sea surface under coastal scenarios was created by combining the mean-square slope (MSS) model for oil-slicked/clean surfaces and the Zavorotny-Voronovich (Z-V) scattering model. DDM simulation of the coastal scenarios effectively represents the scattering coefficient distribution of the presence of an oil slick. Theoretical analysis revealed that oil slicks can be detected within a radius of less than 5 km around the specular reflection point (SP) for BeiDou-R coastal simulation.
