Overcoming Challenges in Writing About Action Research—The Promise of the Development Story

Abstract: There is great demand for articles and books describing what action researchers do but little methodological literature available explaining how researchers can go about writing such articles and books. This constitutes a serious challenge as writing high quality scientific texts is crucial for researchers to learn about and improve their practice. This paper addresses that challenge and offers a 'recipe' for writing, the development story, which aims to help action researchers reflect deeply on their empirica… Show more

“…Our sessions formed a common set of boundary objects, such as mutual development goals and shared project plans (cf. Hildrum & Liavåg Strand 2007). This may be characterised as an open environment where practice developed at different levels, at the learning forums where practitioners and researchers (or we as teachers) met, at the practical environment where users and practitioners met, and at a personal level where the thinking developed.…”

“…For instance, Coughlan and Coghlan (2002) is a benchmark paper in operations management research, and Perry and Gummesson (2004) in the marketing field. According to Hildrum and Strand (2007), although there is great demand for articles and books describing what action researchers do, there is little methodological literature available explaining how researchers can go about writing such articles and books.…”

“…In recent years, a small stream of action research (AR) literature has addressed the topic of networks and examined ways in which social researchers can directly facilitate dialogue and practical collaboration between firms (Hanssen-Bauer and Snow 1996; Chisholm 2001; Hildrum and Strand 2006;Chisholm 2008;Gausdal 2008;Qvale 2008). However, while many studies take into examination specific AR interventions and the tangible effects that these have on inter-firm collaboration (Hanssen-Bauer and Snow 1996;Chisholm 2006Chisholm , 2008Qvale 2008), few studies direct explicit attention to the effects these interventions have on trust-building processes.…”
