Overall Survival of Ovarian Cancer Patients Is Determined by Expression of Galectins-8 and -9

Abstract: The evaluation of new prognostic factors that can be targeted in ovarian cancer diagnosis and therapy is of the utmost importance. Galectins are a family of carbohydrate binding proteins with various implications in cancer biology. In this study, the presence of galectin (Gal)-8 and -9 was investigated in 156 ovarian cancer samples using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Staining was evaluated using semi-quantitative immunoreactivity (IR) scores and correlated to clinical and pathological data. Different types of ga… Show more

“…Exclusion criteria were neoadjuvant chemotherapy as well as benign or borderline tumors. Previously, other pathological parameters were investigated in the same patients' collective, which enables correlation analysis [14][15][16][17]. Clinical data derived from patients' charts, follow up data from Munich Cancer Registry.…”

“…For immunohistochemistry staining, a protocol previously described by our lab was used [17]. Tissue micro arrays of FFPE EOC samples were deparaffinized for 20 min in roticlear (Roth, Kalsruhe, Germany), incubated for 20 min in methanol containing 3% H 2 O 2 to quench the endogen peroxidase, rehydrated in a descending series of alcohol (100-50%), and cooked for 5 min in a pressure cooker containing a sodium-citrate buffer (0.1 M citric acid, 0.1 M sodium citrate, pH = 6.0).…”

“…However, 8 of 12 ovarian cancer tissues had what was deemed medium Gal-8 expression. Based on these preliminary findings, Schulz and colleagues [ 93 ] chose to evaluate 156 ovarian cancer samples using immunohistochemistry and compared the Gal-8 levels and its localization with clinical and pathological outcomes. Of the 156 ovarian cancer samples, they were able to evaluate 143 samples for Gal-8.…”

“…The cluster worded “Galectins and Cancer”, as expected, is the larger one. The cluster includes several papers focused on cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and galectin-based therapeutic approaches [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. The implication of galectins in tumor growth and progression, and more in general the impact that these molecules may have in oncology, is very well-known and has been extensively reviewed [ 3 ].…”

“…Modulation of these galectin-1 related molecules may have prognostic value for this tumor type. Similarly, a specific galectin signature, which can be used as prognostic marker, has been also identified in ovarian carcinoma [ 14 , 15 ].…”
