Overall Mortality After Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Men vs Women

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Survival differences between male and female patients with breast cancer have been reported, but the underlying factors associated with the disparity have not been fully studied. This understanding is fundamental to developing strategies for cancer treatment and survivorship care. OBJECTIVE To compare mortality between male and female patients with breast cancer and quantitatively evaluate the factors associated with sex-based disparity in mortality. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This large, nat… Show more

“…Although there is limited evidence about the indications for adjuvant radiation therapy in MBC patients, the indications generally recommended for MBC patients are similar to those recommended for FBC patients to prevent local recurrence. 15,17,24 We acknowledge that several factors affect the decision on whether adjuvant radiation therapy is necessary in both MBC and FBC patients. However, even after adjusting for factors such as the type of surgical procedure, combined stage, and age, we showed that gender was a determinant of adjuvant radiation therapy.…”

“…Furthermore, male breast cancers are usually diagnosed at advanced stages 3 or 4, imputable mainly to a lack of awareness [11] . The 5-year overall survival rate is also lower for men (77.6%) when compared to women (86.4%) [12] .…”

“…The receptor status of male breast cancers is most commonly estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) positive and HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) negative [1,6]. Men with breast cancer are older (median age of 63 years), present with a larger tumor size (> 2 cm), more frequently have nodal involvement, exhibit more advanced stage, and have poorer stage for stage overall survival compared to women [6,8,9]. Approximately 40% of men present with stage III or IV disease [10].…”
