Overall Environmental Modelling of Newly Designed Curtain Wall Façade Configurations

Abstract: There has been a rapidly growing interest among contemporary architects in recent years in the innovative use of curtain walls as a building enclosure. A curtain wall is a glass and metal skin that wraps the entire building in a continuous, transparent layer. This modern design provides a relatively desirable environment for the occupants. The glass façade allows light and diffused views into the surroundings during the day and can become a glowing and aesthetically pleasing aspect of the skyline at night. The… Show more

“…Therefore, optimizing between conflicting requirements of good light transmission for energy efficiency and lighting illuminance, 96 and protection against harmful glare for comfort and well-being would be a delicate architectural achievement. 99102 Specifying daylighting solutions would require a careful consideration on climate, latitude, orientation, building functions, building locations and types of shading needs, balancing design consideration on various factors such as illuminance, luminance, colour rendering and daylight factor in new buildings. 62,66,103,104 The human health consideration would need to consider the spectral composition of radiation (e.g.…”

“…1 As the amount of direct sunlight entering the room increases, unexpected problems could occur, including discomfort of occupants from a glare and excessive energy consumption in summer as a result of a high cooling load due to the incoming daylight. 2 Because of these problems, it is essential to install shading devices such as roller shades or venetian blinds in an office building which uses curtain walls to block excessive direct sunlight.…”

“…(1) There is no other choice but to choose curtain walls because most modern buildings are steel frame-structured, (2) introduction of available daylight without causing a discomforting glare to occupants, (3) the association of large window areas with better views of the outdoor environment and an enhanced feeling of wellness, and (4) the lightweight structure. 1…”

“…[2][3][4][5] The usage of glazing fac¸ade has become increasingly popular for office buildings due to its aesthetics and visual transparency but with a high energy load and could cause visual discomfort due to glare. 6 A building design should firstly understand how climate response can influence its fac¸ade performance and how this would satisfy the requirement of sustainable development that has become an increasingly important design criteria demanded by the government and clients. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Buildings in sub-tropical climate (e.g.…”

“…59 These types of buildings would require appropriate environmental control such as by using shading devices and/or thermal and glare resistance glazing material. 60,61 Alternatively, air conditioning with large consumption of energy would be needed to provide thermal comfort in the atrium. However, with optimal design, energy consumption for these kind of buildings have been kept below 150 kWh/m 2 /year in some regions of Europe.…”
