Outline of a Comparative Study of Criteria Used in Characterization of the Actinomycetes

Abstract

In the course of the meeting on Streptomycetes in Stockholm, August, 1959, the participants formulated a plan f o r a common experiment which should establish the reproductivity of the stable properties used i n the characterization of streptomycetes. In the various laboratoriea, the aame strains on standardized culture media a r e to be examined and judged at determined intervals for the expression of certain properties. The following outline of the plan was distributed to those who agreed to participate in the experiment. Thirty four individuals and laboratories agreed to participate. Phylogenetic study of the species within the family Streptomycetaceae

“…The strains were examined in each laboratory using strictly standardized media and experimental conditions to determine morphological and pigmentation properties, and carbon utilization profiles (Shirling and Gottlieb 1966). The characters evaluated had been selected based on data from previous international cooperative studies (Küster 1959;Gottlieb 1961Gottlieb , 1963.
