Outdoor performance stability and controlled light-soak testing of amorphous silicon multijunction modules at NREL

Abstract: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been testing amorphous silicon (a-Si) Photovoltaic (PV) modules for more than a decade. NREL has been conducting controlled light-soak testing of multijunction a-Si modules to characterize their performance for stability evaluation as well as to benchmark the technology status. Some of the test modules, after controlled light-soak testing, have been installed outdoors. We have observed that under outdoor exposure, the modules further degrade in performance, p… Show more

“…Light‐induced degradation of power output is found in a‐Si devices. However, the degradation can be reversed at increased temperatures . According to literature, CdTe modules have shown different behaviour in short‐term and long‐term performance, differing amongst manufacturers , which makes it difficult to define general patterns.…”

“…ETSID showed a small recovery in P MPP_STC_pu values while the NEXUS installation showed a decrease in the P MPP_STC_pu values. The small recovery in the ETSID PV plant is explained by means of the seasonal variations in a-Si:H modules, as reported in [61][62][63]. A thermal annealing phenomenon occurs when a-Si:H modules are exposed to high temperatures (summer months), inducing a reversible process in which the hydrogen atoms return to their original position.…”

“…One is to analyze light degradation and thermal annealing phenomena (Staebler-Wronski effect) in laboratory [2], [3], [4]. The other is to conduct outdoor exposure tests [5]. Although much work have been doine on the issues, there still exists the pressing needs for practical way of power rating and prediction of energy output at various locations on the globe.…”
