It is necessary to determine if the tools used in the process of building performance calculation accurately reflect the real conditions, with the objective of introducing simulation in the design process of buildings. The aim of this study is the assessment of the effectiveness of the software ENVI-met v4 on the prediction of the thermodynamic performance of courtyards by means of comparing between field data obtained from simultaneous monitoring of three courtyards and the results obtained from the software simulations. The results of the study show a significant difference between monitored and simulated data for air temperature inside the courtyards. And the difference between outdoor temperature and courtyard temperature is too important not to be considered in building efficiency calculations. For that reason, ENVI-met it is not an accurate software to be used in the process of design of this kind of architectural transitional spaces that can be very important in order to design nZEB in some climates.

While indoor comfort represents a widely investigated research topic with relation to sustainable development and energy-demand reduction in the built environment, outdoor comfort remains an open field of study, especially with reference to the impacts of climate change and the quality of life for inhabitants, particularly in urban contexts. Despite the relevant efforts spent in the last few decades to advance the understanding of phenomena and the knowledge in this specific field, which obtained much evidence for the topic's relevance, a comprehensive picture of the studies, as well as a classification of the interconnected subjects and outcomes, is still lacking. This paper reports the outcomes of a literature review aimed at screening the available resources dealing with outdoor thermal comfort, in order to provide a state-of-the-art review that identifies the main topics focused by the researchers, as well as the barriers in defining suitable indexes for assessing thermal comfort in outdoor environments. Although several accurate models and software are available to quantify outdoor human comfort, the evocated state of mind of the final user still remains at the core of this uncertain process.Energies 2020, 13, 2079 2 of 22 more people to use outdoor spaces would bring greater benefits into the physical, environmental, economic and social spheres of the cities [6-9].Scientists worldwide have thus focused their attention on this topic, making available a wide range of tools and methods to assess human thermal outdoor comfort in different climatic contexts. Over 100 biometeorological and thermal stress indexes [10] have been developed, adopting different approaches and rationales, aiming at linking the microclimatic conditions to the perceived sensations.Since the available knowledge on human thermal perception and related evaluation protocols were mainly the ones previously developed for interior spaces and other confined spaces, the assessment of outdoor conditions initially refers to these patterns [11].In fact, human thermal comfort and its assessment were studied since the beginning of the 20th Century, when the first simplified models were developed [12]. The two node model applied thermodynamics principles to energy exchanges between the human body and its thermal environment [13] for the first time during the 1930s, but it is only from the 1960s onwards that researchers were able to analyze the main climatic parameters connected to the perception of thermal comfort (e.g., air temperature, radiant temperature, air humidity, air flow velocity) when the first climate chambers were made available [14]. Urban vegetation is an essential element of the urban city pedestrian walkway. Despite city forest regulations and urban planning best practices, vegetation planning lacks clear comprehension and compatibility with other urban elements surrounding it. Urban planners and academic researchers currently devote vital attention to include most of the urban elements and their impact on the occupants and the environment in the planning stage of urban development. With the advancement in computational design, they have developed various algorithms to generate design alternatives and measure their impact on the environment that meets occupants’ needs and perceptions of their city. In particular, multi-agent-based simulations show great promise in developing rule compliance with urban vegetation design tools. This paper proposed an automatic urban vegetation city rule compliance approach for pedestrian pathway vegetation, leveraging multi-agent system and algorithmic modeling tools. This approach comprises three modules: rule compliance (T-Rule), street vegetation design tool (T-Design), and multi-agent alternative generation (T-Agent). Notably, the scope of the paper is limited to trees, shrubbery, and seating area configurations in the urban pathway context. To validate the developed design tool, a case study was tested, and the vegetation design tool generated the expected results successfully. A questionnaire was conducted to give feedback on the use of the developed tool for enhancing positive experience of the developed tool. It is anticipated that the proposed tool has the potential to aid urban planners in decision-making and develop more practical vegetation planting plans compared with the conventional Two-Dimensional (2D) plans, and give the city occupants the chance to take part in shaping their city by merely selecting from predefined parameters in a user interface to generate their neighborhood pathway vegetation plans. Moreover, this approach can be extended to be embedded in an interactive map where city occupants can shape their neighborhood greenery and give feedback to urban planners for decision-making.
