Outcomes of Palatal Lift Prosthesis on Dysarthric Speech

Abstract: The use of PLP is an effective treatment option of dysarthric speech. Besides nasalance scores, the sequential motion rate, speech rate, vital capacity, and sound pressure level are considered reliable speech measures that may be used to evaluate the effect of PLP on dysarthria.

“…Alfwaress et al reported the outcome of palatal lift prosthesis on dysarthria speech, and they concluded that the prosthesis improved the quality of speech during the production of velar syllables such as /ka/. LaVelle and Hardy had 44 patients with a neurological deficit and palatal incompetence who had been treated with palatal lift prosthesis and demonstrated the effectiveness of the prosthesis in patients with pharyngeal dysfunction …”

“…In addition to these studies, others were found about the use of palatal lift prosthesis 27 to improve the dysarthric pattern, which improved the sequential movement rate, speech rate, vital capacity, sound pressure level, intelligibility and reduction of nasality in the studied individuals with ALS; and mouth micro-switch 21 , that showed to be more agile when compared to the optical micro-switch actuated by means of head movement.…”
