Outcomes of Ischemic Stroke and Associated Factors Among Elderly Patients With Large-Artery Atherosclerosis: A Hospital-Based Follow-Up Study in China

Abstract: Large-artery atherosclerotic (LAA) stroke is the most common subtype of ischemic stroke. However, risk factors for long-term outcomes of LAA stroke in the elderly Chinese population have not been well-described. Therefore, we aimed to assess outcomes and risk factors at 3, 12, and 36 months after LAA stroke onset among stroke patients aged 60 years and older. All consecutive LAA patients aged ≥ 60 years were prospectively recruited from Dongying People's Hospital between January 2016 and December 2018. The cli… Show more

“…According to data from the China National Stroke Screening and Prevention Project (CNSSPP), the standardized prevalence of AF among Chinese adults aged ≥40 years was 2.31%. Notably, the rate of stroke recurrence in our patients with ESUS was quite close to that reported in patients with large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) ( 25 , 26 ), further supporting that large artery non-stenosing plaque might be the potential etiology of stroke and stroke recurrence in this ESUS population in China.…”

“…Eight studies ( 21 , 31 , 32 , 35–37 , 44 , 45 ) with 6,801 patients in total revealed an association between per unit increase in hs-CRP levels and mortality. Heterogeneity among studies was significant ( I 2 = 92.8%; p < 0.01), and thus a random-effects model was utilized.…”

“…In the study, subgroup analysis showed that high levels of AIP were associated with stroke subtypes, especially in the LAA stroke subtype. Some studies have verified that AS plays a important role in LAA stroke (34). AIP may reflect subtle metabolic interactions throughout the lipoprotein complex (11).…”
