Outcomes of Interferon/Ribavirin Therapy in Patients with HCV Defined by Expression of Plasma Soluble Human Leukocyte Antigen-G but Not IL-37

Abstract: BackgroundChronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection leads to life-threatening complications worldwide. Immunomodulation signals the response to virus clearance. The immune-suppressive molecule human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G) has been shown to function in inhibiting both innate and adaptive immune responses. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of HLA-G and IL-37 in sustained virological response (SVR) and non-SVR HCV-positive patients before and after complete treatment with a combin… Show more

“…Consistent with our findings, a recent study reported that IL-37 mRNA expression and serum protein concentration are higher in patients with TB than in healthy donors (29). Similarly, mRNA expression and serum concentrations of IL-37 are increased in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (36), hepatitis B virus (37), and HIV-1 (38). Several studies have identified many cytokines that play important roles in susceptibility/resistance to Mtb infection.…”

“…Only three of the 19 analyzed studies were of modest sample size, with n ≥ 100, yet none were ≥ 120. Ding et al (64) conducted the largest study, including 112 healthy subjects, and reported a mean (SD) plasma IL-37 level of 47.6 (5.9) pg/mL, which computes to a range of 35.8 -59.5 pg/mL. This range may be considered too narrow based on the results of this metaanalysis.…”

“…In contrast, one study evaluating HLA‐G and anti‐HCV in patients on the waiting list for kidney transplantation was not able to find significant difference in all anti‐HCV positive groups regarding HLA‐G expression, although none of the patients showed active infection (Sommese et al., 2018). In addition, studies comparing expression levels of immunomodulatory genes, including HLA‐G , before and after treatment with pegylated interferon in combination with ribavirin and other with anti‐viral agent silibinin pointed to a higher HLA‐G expression in HCV+ patients before treatment (Castellaneta et al., 2016; Ding et al., 2016). The findings of the two previously mentioned studies highlight a possible influence of the infection in HLA‐G expression.…”
