Outcomes of a 12-week ecologically valid observational study of first treatment with methylphenidate in a representative clinical sample of drug naïve children with ADHD

Abstract: Randomized placebo-controlled trials have reported efficacy of methylphenidate (MPH) for Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, selection biases due to strict entry criteria may limit the generalizability of the findings. Few ecologically valid studies have investigated effectiveness of MPH in representative clinical populations of children. This independently funded study aims to describe treatment responses and their predictors during the first 12 weeks of MPH treatment using repeated meas… Show more

“…Ghuman et al (2007) and Newcorn et al (2010) reported that associated comorbidities to ADHD have been shown to alter response to MPH, in samples of preschoolers and adolescents respectively. Conversely, in samples of school-age children, Chan et al (2017) and Kaalund-Brok et al (2021) found no relation between comorbid disorders and MPH response.…”

“…van der Oord et al ( 2008) described a better response to MPH in children with higher IQ based on teachers' reports but not parental reports. In a population of ADHD children with no comorbid intellectual deficiency, Kaalund-Brok et al (2021) found IQ above 85 versus IQ below or equal to 85 but above 70 being associated with a better chance of normalization or borderline normalization of the inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptomatology, whereas the weekly reduction of inattention and of hyperactivityimpulsivity showed no differences between IQ groups. In similar populations of children (IQ > 70), eight studies show no association between IQ and response to MPH (Chan et al, 2017;Chazan et al, 2011;Grizenko et al, 2006;Johnston et al, 2015;Kim et al, 2015;Lee et al, 2009;Ter-Stepanian et al, 2010), including in preschoolers (Ghuman et al, 2007).…”
