Outcome of repaired unstable meniscal tears in children and adolescents

Abstract: BackgroundUnstable meniscal tears are rare injuries in skeletally immature patients. Loss of a meniscus increases the risk of subsequent development of degenerative changes in the knee. This study deals with the outcome of intraarticular meniscal repair and factors that affect healing. Parameters of interest were type and location of the tear and also the influence of simultaneous reconstruction of a ruptured ACL.MethodsWe investigated the outcome of 25 patients (29 menisci) aged 15 (4–17) years who underwent … Show more

“…Arthroscopic meniscectomy and repair are the surgical options for symptomatic lateral discoid menisci, and good results have been reported9). Repair outcomes have been reported similarly for both lateral and medial menisci10), and it has been recommended that the discoid meniscus be preserved if severe symptoms are not present. The patient described here played sports recreationally, but experienced only lateral pain and clicking in both knees.…”

“…Because of their good healing potential, meniscus tears in a skeletally immature patient should be repaired regardless of the lesion's location or tear pattern. 46,47 In adults, the success rate of a meniscus repair mainly depends on the lesion's location, tear pattern, and the patient's age. 47 To improve meniscus healing, several different techniques (such as needling, abrasion, trephination, or application of fibrin clots or platelet-rich plasma) have been recommended.…”

“…Patient age seems to be important, with poorer outcomes following repair of degenerate tears in older patients. Conversely, good outcomes from meniscal repair have been reported in children, regardless of the morphology and the vascular zone of the injury [16].…”
