Outcome of prenatally diagnosed mild unilateral cerebral ventriculomegaly.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of prenatally diagnosed unilateral cerebral ventriculomegaly and also to assess neonatal outcome in infants with this prenatal diagnosis. A computerized ultrasonography database identified fetuses with isolated and nonisolated unilateral cerebral ventriculomegaly from October 1994 to June 1999. The Denver II Developmental Screening Test was used to assess developmental skills. Unilateral cerebral ventriculomegaly was diagnosed in 15 of 21,172 (1 per 14… Show more

“…As expected, improvement of VM is associated with a better outcome, while progression indicates a worse outcome (Arora et al, 1998;Gaglioti et al, 2005;Ouahba et al, 2006). On the contrary it seems that being the VM bilateral or unilateral does not affect the outcome (Lipitz et al, 1998;Senat et al, 1999;Durfee et al, 2001;Kinzler et al, 2001;Sadan et al, 2007). Pilu et al (1999) and Gaglioti et al (2005) found a prevalence of male fetuses with VM.…”

“…The same gender differences did not hold true in cases of unilateral ventriculomegaly, inasmuch as male and female fetuses appeared to be evenly distributed. 2,3,6 When discussing normal fetal outcomes, however, we must determine how long the infants must be followed to ascertain full discovery of adverse outcomes. Most studies in the literature have follow-ups of a few months to a year or so, with normal milestones indicating a normal outcome.…”
