Ostreid Herpesvirus 1 Infection among Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) Spat: Relevance of Water Temperature to Virus Replication and Circulation Prior to the Onset of Mortality

Abstract: A number of bivalve species worldwide, including the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, have been affected by mass mortality events associated with herpesviruses, resulting in significant losses. A particular herpesvirus was purified from naturally infected larval Pacific oysters, and its genome was completely sequenced. This virus has been classified as Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) within the family Malacoherpesviridae. Since 2008, mass mortality outbreaks among C. gigas in Europe have been related to the d… Show more

“…POMS occurs in Sydney estuaries when water temperature is~22À268C 1,2 ; this is~5 o C higher than in France 19,20 . An experimental infection model has been developed and used in Australia to confirm these field observations on water temperature; it revealed an important interaction between water temperature and infectious dose 21,22 .…”

“…This criteria is clearly met by longitudinal cohort studies: experimental reproduction of the disease by cohabitation between infected and non-infected animals in comparison with control (Schikorski et al, 2011a;Schikorski et al, 2011b) and in field studies, with rapid and strong increase in prevalence and viral load just preceding mortalities (Paul-Pont et al, 2013b;Keeling et al, 2014;Renault et al, 2014a). “…free of OsHV-1) in areas where OsHV-1 is present have been carried out in the field (Jenkins et al, 2013;Degremont and Benabdelmouna, 2014;Keeling et al, 2014). Sentinel oyster became rapidly infected and died rapidly when the temperature rose above the threshold and the level of mortality correlated with OsHV-1 tissue load (Sauvage et al, 2009;Oden et al, 2011;Paul-Pont et al, 2013b;Keeling et al, 2014;Renault et al, 2014a).…”
