Osteoporosis Risk Factors and Early Life-style Modifications to Decrease Disease Burden in Women

Abstract: Prevention of osteoporosis should begin in childhood and continue throughout adulthood. Although genetic determinants of muscle and bone mass may offer other therapeutic options in the future, currently, counseling should primarily focus on lifestyle modification including healthy dietary practices and regular exercise. Vitamin supplementation, particularly vitamin D, should be considered to enhance diet based on patient's need. Attention to estrogen status is also important. In addition, patients should be co… Show more

“…Early-life conditions are increasingly recognized as playing an important role in the etiology of chronic diseases (23), including coronary heart disease (2426) and cardiac dysfunction (27), type-2 diabetes (2830), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (3133), asthma (34), osteoporosis (3537), and hypertension (38, 39). In addition, social and material disadvantages experienced in early-life have been associated with poor health behaviors in adulthood, such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption (4042), obesity (4244), and poor overall mental and physical health (45).…”

“…[6][7][8] Other protective lifestyle behaviors include consuming adequate energy through a well-balanced and nonrestrictive diet, exercising regularly, limiting excessive alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking. 2,[9][10][11][12][13][14] Although bone mass develops and peaks during adolescence and early adulthood, adequate maintenance throughout adulthood is necessary to reduce the rate of natural bone loss and offset the effects of osteoporosis in later years. 15,16 Although Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women experience similar rates of low bone mineral density and osteoporosis, diet behaviors that impact bone health are less commonly examined in Hispanic women.…”

“…-Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake -Decrease alcohol, caffeine and tobacco consumption -Encourage regular physical activity [39] -Fall prevention, with a home safety evaluation, if indicated [31,40] Recommending the use of calcium and vitamin D supplementation is an easy and relatively inexpensive intervention that can be applied to the vast majority of people encountered after a fragility fracture. There are good meta-analyses on the fracture risk reduction of calcium and vitamin D supplementation, with the corollary that the benefit might be seen more in institutionalised individuals more so than in communitydwelling individuals [41][42][43].…”
