Ossicular Chain Status in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media in Adults

Abstract: This study was conducted to find out the status of the ossicles in cases of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). One hundred and fifty cases of CSOM, who underwent surgery, were included and their intra-operative ossicular chain findings noted. Ossicular erosion was found to be much more common in unsafe CSOM than in safe CSOM. Malleus was found to be the most resistant ossicle to erosion whereas incus was found to be the most susceptible.

“…The incidence of ossicular erosion is much greater in unsafe CSOM than in safe CSOM. 7 Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that Pre-operative PTA values had a statistically significant but weak positive correlation. (r=0.366, p-value <0.05) with age which can attributed to the senile changes, whereas no or very little positive correlation was seen with the duration of the disease(r=0.092, p-value>0.05).…”

“…Of these innumerable studies, those that closely resemble the social, anthropological and cultural characteristics of our study participants have been reviewed to refresh our concepts related to the pattern of this disease. [4][5][6][7] The aim of this cross sectional study was to acknowledge the changing trends in the presentations and of atticoantral type of chronic suppurative otitis media with or without complications.…”

“…The hearing loss would be noticed only when the disease has progressed sufficiently to cause a significant impairment of hearing by perforation or ossicular destruction. 4 Majority of our patients 21 (40.38%) were in the age group of 16 to 20 years followed by 16 (30.77%) in the age group of 21-30 years. In present study, young adults were found to be more affected similar to other studies.…”

“…Malleus is the most resistant for erosion and most important predictor of hearing outcome in most cases of cholesteatoma surgery, ossicular reconstruction was done depending on presence or absence of stapes superstructure. [5][6][7][8][9] In most cases of ossicular reconstruction preference is given to autologous materials. 4 Autogenic materials like ossicles, cortical bone and cartilage can be used for grafting.…”
