Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with subcarrier power modulation for doubling the spectral efficiency of 6G and beyond networks

Abstract: With the emergence of new applications (eg, extended reality [XR] and haptics), which require to be simultaneously served not just with low latency and sufficient reliability, but also with high spectral efficiency, future networks (ie, 6G and beyond) should be capable of meeting this demand by introducing new effective transmission designs. Motivated by this, a novel modulation technique termed as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with subcarrier power modulation (OFDM-SPM) is proposed for providing … Show more

“…Such a novel noncoherent modulation scheme has great potential in achieving the following merits: 1) reduce complexity, 2) enhance power-saving, and 3) improve the spectral efficiency by at least twice as that offered by conventional OFDM-based schemes. It should be mentioned that OFDM with subcarrier power modulation (OFDM-SPM) [15], [21] is a recently proposed novel modulation scheme that vastly increases the spectral efficiency of the system. This is done by introducing a third dimension through which data can be conveyed.…”

“…In a massive MIMO (mMIMO) system, the number of antennas in MIMO increases to hundreds. mMIMO has been classified as one of the high potential wireless communication technologies with the ability to have high user capacity [4], which is a key requirement for 5G-IoT and beyond technologies [6] [7] [16]. Nevertheless, numerous challenges are facing mMIMO and the general wireless communication paradigms.…”

“…For future 6G wireless communication systems, low-latency, and less-complex architecture with high spectral-efficient data transmission can be provided by such modulation Schemes. 12 Besides, the Intelligent Transport System has gained immense popularity in smart cities. Google, Uber, Toshiba, and Apple are some of the global automotive stakeholders currently working in the connected autonomous vehicles domain.…”
