Orthodontic thermoformed retainers: a two‐arm laboratory study into post‐fabrication outcomes

Abstract: Thermoformed retainers do no thin uniformly against individual teeth and have variable intra- and inter-arch post-fabrication thicknesses. There is no clear benefit in using a specific type of thermoforming machine or material for increasing post-fabrication thickness or reducing thinning rate. Blank thickness and tooth morphology influence these outcomes.

“…This slight extrusion was probably due to the difficulty of accurately predicting the final thickness of the vacuum‐formed maintainer after thermoforming. It is known that the thermoforming process reduces the thickness of a vacuum‐formed appliance, compared to the original dimension of the thermoplastic sheet 28 . Thus, some residual interocclusal space might be present after the thermoforming process, allowing limited extrusion movement 28 .…”

“…It is known that the thermoforming process reduces the thickness of a vacuum‐formed appliance, compared to the original dimension of the thermoplastic sheet 28 . Thus, some residual interocclusal space might be present after the thermoforming process, allowing limited extrusion movement 28 . The banded space maintainers allow free antagonist tooth extrusion, but in several patients this vertical movement can be inhibited by occlusal contact involving any of the teeth adjacent to the extraction space, and this occlusal contact may already be present before extraction or arise after a small extrusion movement.…”

“…The following patient-centred questions, which "patients care about" for the management of peripheral arterial disease, could also be considered by clinicians prior to providing endodontic treatment (Smolderen et al, 2018) Collaborations with patients, or patient representatives, or both, can lead to more effective knowledge translation in routine clinical practice. This relies on the research data that has been co-produced by them to being successfully collected and transferred to researchers and clinicians in a manner that can be easily integrated into a shared decision-making (Etkind et al, 2015), from which ensues obtaining informed consent prior to treatment (Doğramacı et al, 2018(Doğramacı et al, , 2021Rossi-Fedele et al, 2020).…”
