Oropharyngeal Candida colonization in human immunodeficiency virus infected patients

Abstract: Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) is a very common oral symptom for HIV infected patients. OPC is often caused by overgrowth of commensal Candida strains which asymptomatically colonize oral cavity of HIV+ patients. HIV infection can not only weaken the systemic and local mucosal immunity but also interact with Candida species colonizing in oral cavity. These changes in host immunity and Candida species may facilitate Candida colonization in oral cavity of HIV infected patients. This review will discuss oral Can… Show more

“…Several studies have shown a high prevalence of oral Candida carriage in HIV-infected individuals [5,6,[8][9][10], and this can vary according to sampling method and geographical location [5,8,9]. By using oral rinse for yeast isolation, other Brazilian surveys detected oropharyngeal Candida carriage in approximately 60% to 70% of HIV-infected individuals [6,8].…”

“…In fact, this is by far the most prevalent commensal and pathogenic of the Candida species [3,5,6,[8][9][10]17,35]. However, increasing rates of colonization and even infections with other species of Candida in HIV-infected individuals have been observed elsewhere [2][3][4]8].…”

“…Varios autores en diferentes países han estudiado la colonización oral por Candida spp., en individuos infectados por el VIH (2,7,8). En Colombia se han publicado tres artículos relacionados con Candida spp., en la cavidad oral de pacientes VIH/sida (9-11), pero solo uno de ellos fue sobre colonización (9).…”
