The Junggar Basin of NW China is representative in containing oil and gas seeps worldwide as there are a wide variety of oil and gas seeps over a large area. However, the genesis of these seeps remains poorly known, limiting the understanding of their implications for petroluem geology and hydrocarbon exploration. Here, we investigate 26 samples of oil and gas seeps from nine outcrops within five areas along the margins of the Junggar Basin to determine the geochemical characteristics of the hydrocarbons, constrain their genesis, and discuss future exploration strategies. Results indicate one type of gas seeps and five types of oil seeps. The gas seeps are derived from low-maturity Jurassic source rocks and occur in the Wusu and Dushanzi areas in the western segment of the southern basin. Type 1 oil seeps, sourced from lower Permian rocks (P1f), occur on the northwestern margin. Type 2 oil seeps, derived from middle Permian source rocks (P2l/P2p), occur on the eastern segment of the southern margin and eastern margin of the Junggar Basin. Type 3 oil seeps, with Jurassic source rocks, occur in the Qigu area in the middle segment of the southern basin. Type 4 oil seeps, with Cretaceous source rocks, occur in the Anjihai and Huoerguosi areas within the middle segment of the southern basin. Type 5 oil seeps mainly have Paleogene source rocks with a minor contribution from Jurassic rocks and occur in the Wusu and Dushanzi areas in the western segment of the southern basin with the single-type gas seeps. These results indicate the presence of lacustrine hybrid petroleum systems within the Junggar Basin with complex oil and gas sources and migration-accumulation. Six potential areas along the basin margin were proposed for exploration in the future.

Fourier-Transform Infrared Proxies for Oil Source and Maturity: Insights from the Early Permian Alkaline Lacustrine System, Junggar Basin (NW China)

Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been widely applied in oil geochemical studies, particularly with respect to the physical properties and maturity of hydrocarbons. However, in general, it has been seldom used to investigate the organic matter (OM) depositional environment and source of oil. In this paper, we present such an FTIR spectroscopy study based on a case investigation in the early Permian alkaline–lacustrine-derived oils from the Mahu sag, Junggar Basin, Northwest China. The results define 13 FTIR structural parameters that are associated with the OM depositional environment, source, and maturity of oil based on a comparison with well-established oil carbon isotopic and biomarker data. These would be general to the alkaline (saline)–lacustrine petroleum systems worldwide. Further combined FTIR spectroscopy and biomarker parameters in the study area reveal that the lower Permian Fengcheng formation-derived oils in the Mahu sag were generated from source rocks deposited in alkaline–saline to brackish–freshwater environments. The oils have a zoned occurrence, reflecting the general rules of hydrocarbon generation in alkaline lacustrine environments. This study represents the first FTIR spectroscopy study of alkaline–lacustrine oils and suggests that FTIR spectroscopy appears to have considerable potential in advancing oil geochemical research. The data demonstrate potential for guiding regional oil exploration.

Although a large number of meandering rivers have been studied by means of modern sedimentation, instrument detection, numerical simulation, flume experiment and field outcrop, and a lot of achievements have been made, there are not many fine anatomical examples of deep buried ancient rivers, which is a situation that still needs to be improved. The main difficulties in the research of deep, ancient meandering rivers are the acquisition of data and the incompleteness of structure, which are both difficulties and challenges. Under the guidance of the modern meandering river fan sedimentary model and migration law, we established the scheme of meandering river geomorphology and structure. In the process of river migration, a variety of single migration models (expansion, contraction, rotation, and translation) and composite migration models can be distinguished. By analyzing the distribution structure characteristics of channel configuration elements in different migration modes, the coupled model of the meandering channel plane and profile structure is established by systematically constructing plane and profile combined with a three-dimensional channel configuration model. Based on the data of the dense well, taking the Shan 11 sublayer in the Su-x block of the Sulige gas field as an example, the reservoir structure of the deep, ancient meandering channel is dissected. In order to reconstruct the evolution of the deep, ancient channel and make it more consistent with the real laws of river migration and evolution, the morphological migration law of the modern river is applied to the ancient sedimentation, and the migration configuration is dissected by combining with the plane-profile structure coupled model. It further reveals the heterogeneity, the vertical distribution and the superposition form of the channel sand, and enriches the theory of the reservoir configuration of underground fluvial facies, all of which are significant for oil and gas exploration and development.
