Orientocardiochiles, a new genus of Cardiochilinae (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), with descriptions of two new species from Malaysia and Vietnam

Abstract: For the first time in 21 years, a new genus of cardiochiline braconid wasp, Orientocardiochiles Kang & Long, gen. nov. (type species Orientocardiochiles joeburrowi Kang, sp. nov.), is discovered and described. This genus represents the ninth genus in the Oriental region. Two new species (O. joeburrowi Kang, sp. nov. and O. nigrofasciatus Long, sp. nov.) are described and illustrated, and a key to species of the genus, with detailed images, is added. Diagnostic characters of the new genus are analyzed a… Show more

“…Costa Rica is one of the biodiversity hotspots, and a total estimated hymenopteran fauna in the country is ~ 20,000 species, including ~ 2,000 estimated species of braconid wasps (Gaston et al 1996). Cardiochilinae is a subfamily of Braconidae, containing 17 genera and 220+ species (Yu et al 2012;Kang et al 2020). Bohayella Belokobylskij, 1987 (Belokobylskij 1987) is an unusual genus of the subfamily, with nine previously described species that are only known from the Old World, including Afrotropical, Australasian, Oriental, and southern central Palearctic regions (Dangerfield et al 1999;Mercado and Wharton 2003;Yu et al 2012).…”

“…Approximately half of all cardiochiline species were included in the two largest genera Cardiochiles Nees, 1819 and Schoenlandella Cameron, 1905, and most genera contain fewer than 10 species ( Yu et al 2016 ). In the Oriental region, 55 species in nine genera are recorded, which represents the highest species diversity and second highest generic diversity of Cardiochilinae in the world ( Yu et al 2016 ; Kang et al 2020 ). Since 2000, seven genera and 22 new species have been described: one species of Asiacardiochiles Telenga, 1955 by Ahmad (2004) ; five species of Austerocardiochiles Dangerfield, Austin & Whitfield, 1999 by Ahmad (2004) , Chen et al (2004) , and Long et al (2019) ; one species of Cardiochiles by Ahmad (2004) , three species of Eurycardiochiles Dangerfield, Austin & Whitfield, 1999 by Chen et al (2004) ; nine species of Hartemita Cameron, 1910 by Ahmad (2004) and Long and van Achterberg (2011a, 2011b ); two species of Orientocardiochiles Kang & Long, 2020 by Kang et al (2020) ; and one species of Schoenlandella by Ahmad (2004) .…”
