Orientation Dependence of Elastic and Piezoelectric Properties in Rhombohedral BiFeO3

Abstract: Through a coordinate transformation approach, crystal orientation dependences of elastic and piezoelectric properties at room temperature have been investigated in a three-dimensional space for rhombohedral bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3). Elastic constants (stiffnesses) c11′, c12′, c13′ and piezoelectric constants d15′, d31′, d33′ along arbitrary orientations were obtained based on crystalline asymmetry characteristics of 3m point group BiFeO3. Parameters along specific orientations obtaining the largest values were… Show more

“…The hydrostatic piezoelectric effect induces a change of the polarization ΔP = −p(2d 31 + d 33 ). Taking the piezoelectric co efficient for bulk BFO d 31 = -4.5 pC/N and d 33 = 18 pC/N, [46,47] one can estimate that a pressure of 135 MPa acting on a NP upon ultrasonication decreases its polarization by ΔP = 0.12 µC cm −2 . This will lead to an excess of free charge carriers near to the surface of NPs.…”

“…Due to which the cycloid previously assumed (type -1) is only applicable for bulk and the type-2 cycloid (applicable for strained films) has relatively less critical field than type -1 [3] (see Figure 5). It must also be noted that there is a dependency of piezoelectric and elastic parameters on the orientation and the spatial anisotropy of the elastic stiffness (c ij ) and the piezoelectric coefficient (d ij ) on the asymmetrical characteristics of the rhombohedral R3c BFO (with 3 m space group) [59]. The ME effect is expected to occur when the derivative of antiferrodistortion vector (AFD) with respect to electric field undergoes critical behavior [55] and is supported by the fact that certain magnitudes of external fields lead to a reorientation of antiferromagnetic structure [56].…”

“…Unlike the strict conditions of semiconductor microelectronics technology for MEMS devices [16], 3D printing can easily fabricate the required mechanically controlled devices [17,18]. The 3D printed metamaterial devices not only work for electromagnetic wave control, but also have excellent mechanical performance [19,20], for instance compressive strength. So, 3D printed metamaterial absorbers can be applied to various aspects, e.g.…”
