Organophosphate poisoning in marmosets

Abstract: SummaryDue to faulty use of a ch]orpyriphos-diazinon combination as a pesticide within a laboratory animal house, 19 marmosets of 2 species (Saguinus [uscicol/is and Cal/ithrix jacchus) of 98 at risk died from organophosphorous poisoning (19% mortality). The clinic a] signs were those of cholinesterase inhibitors. The morphological lesions consisted predominantly of haemorrhages in several organs, particulary the CNS, and of bone marrow necroses.

“…3.5 Accidental poisoning of callitrichids at the University of Göttingen (Brack and Rothe, 1982) A long-standing breeding colony of Callithrix jacchus which was involved in a long-term breeding-behavioral project was virtually destroyed by the use of organophosphates for insect control instead of the required pyrethroids, thus violating the existing contract. A great number of the animals suffered from extreme behavioral disturbances, miosis or mydriasis of the eyes, and in many, but not all, cases bloody-mucoid diarrhea.…”
