Organophosphate Poisoning and Subsequent Acute Kidney Injury Risk

Abstract: Small numbers of the papers have studied the association between organophosphate (OP) poisoning and the subsequent acute kidney injury (AKI). Therefore, we used the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to study whether patients with OP poisoning are associated with a higher risk to have subsequent AKI.The retrospective cohort study comprised patients aged ≥20 years with OP poisoning and hospitalized diagnosis during 2000–2011 (N = 8924). Each OP poisoning patient was frequency-matched to 4 contr… Show more

“…The rapid accumulation of acetylcholine in synaptic junctions of central nervous system and peripheral tissues results in cholinergic crises and this may lead to ischemic ATN[5]. Paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridylium dichloride) is widely used as a herbicide.…”

“…Lee FY et al, have demonstrated six fold increased risk of AKI in patients with OP poisoning. 13 In this study, 8% and 4% of AKI was associated with malaria and leptospirosis respectively. Increased parasitaemia have led to AKI in falciparum malaria cases.…”

“…For cholinergic effects, atropine is used but for nicotinergic effects, oximes are needed in treatment [5]. Kidney injury is an understimated complication of OP poisoning particularly when combined with other intoxications [6]. When kidney injury occurs, hemodyalisis must be kept in mind [7].…”
