A series of novel 4,4Ј-disubstituted organic-organometallic stilbenes were synthesized, that is, the 4Ј-substituted stil--in which R = C 2 H 2 C 6 H 4 -RЈ-4Ј with RЈ = NMe 2 , OMe, SiMe 3 , H, I, CN, NO 2 ) (1-7). In these compounds the PtCl grouping can be considered to be present as a donor substituent. Their synthesis involved a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction of [PtCl(NCN-CHO-4)] (9) with the appropriate phosphonate ester derivatives (8a-g). Under these reaction conditions, the C-Pt bond in aldehyde 9 was not affected, and the platinated stilbene products were obtained in 53-90 % yield. The solidstate structures of complexes 1, 2 and 5-7 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which revealed interesting bent conformations for 2, 5 and 7. a b s t r a c tVarious para-OH functionalized ECE-pincer metal complexes [MX(ECE-OH)L n ] (ECE-OH = [C 6 H 2 (CH 2 E) 2 -2,6-OH-4] À , E = NMe 2 , PPh 2 and SPh) were synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of neutral [PdCl(SCS-OH)], [PdCl(NCN-OH)], and cationic [Pd(PCP-OH)(MeCN)](BF 4 ) are reported. The neutral halide complexes exhibit self-assembly to form polymeric chains via H-bonding involving the para-OH group as donors and the halide ligand on the metal as acceptors. Moreover, the halide ligand can be replaced by a monomeric aryloxy-O ligand leading to the formation of a covalently bonded dimer. The crystal structure of such a dimer derived from [PdI(NCN-OH)] is reported. Furthermore, these pincer-metal complexes were tethered through a carbamate linker to a siloxane functionality with the aim to be immobilized on a silica support. The crystal structure of a siloxane-functionalized [PtI(NCN-Z)] complex exemplifies how other H-bonding interactions not involving the metal-halide groupings can lead to polymeric networks as well.

The area broadly described as crystal engineering is currently expanding at a brisk pace. Imaginative schemes for supramolecular synthesis, and correlations between molecular structure, crystal packing and physical properties are presented in the literature with increasing regularity. In practice, crystal engineering can be many different things; synthesis, statistical analysis of structural data, ab initio calculations etc. Consequently, we have been provided with a new playing field where chemists from traditionally unconnected parts of the spectrum have exchanged ideas, defined goals and made creative contributions to further progress not only in crystal engineering, but also in other disciplines of chemistry. Crystal engineering is delineated by the nature and structural consequences of intermolecular forces, and the way in which such interactions are utilized for controlling the assembly of molecular building blocks into infinite architectures. Although it is important to acknowledge that a crystal structure is the result of a subtle balance between a multitude of non-covalent forces, this article will focus on design strategies based upon the hydrogen bond and will present a range of approaches that have relied on the directionality and selectivity of such interactions in the synthesis of predictable one-, twoand three-dimensional motifs.
