a b s t r a c tThe spatial and seasonal variations of atmospheric organochlorine compounds (OCs) concentrations was investigated at six sites on an urban-rural transect in Tianjin, China from July 2006 to June 2008 using XAD-based passive air samplers. The samplers were deployed for six time periods. Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) air concentrations were highest at Tanggu and Tuanbowa and decreased dramatically further away from these two sites. The maximum proportion of b-HCH compared to RHCHs (12.1-32.2%) was found in Hangu, suggesting its persistence. The a/c-HCH ratio was between 1.26 and 5.79 which signified the combined influence of technical HCHs and lindane. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane related compounds (DDTs) were higher at Hangu compared with other sites which was attributed to its continuing production there. Low p,p 0 -DDE/p,p 0 -DDT in Hangu and Tanggu were found, reflecting the fresh input of DDTs while the relatively high o,p 0 -DDT/p,p 0 -DDT ratios indicated the agricultural application of dicofol. Polychlorinated biphenyls distribution elucidated that the urban area could be their emission source. Hexachlorobenzene, with the highest concentrations in Tanggu, showed the smallest industrial/urbanrural gradient ($4-9 times) than those of other chemicals ($17-49 for RHCHs, $10-77 for RDDTs), but comparable with PCBs (PCB28 and PCB52) ($3-10). Seasonal variations of OCPs were featured by higher concentration in spring and summer and lower in winter. This was likely associated with (i) their temperature-driven re-volatilization and (ii) application of dicofol in late spring and summer and DDTcontaining antifouling paints for fishing ships in summer. However seasonality of PCBs concentrations was site-specific on the Tianjin scale.

Effects of nano-sized zero-valent iron (nZVI) on DDT degradation in soil and its toxicity to collembola and ostracods

Nano sized zero valent iron (nZVI) has been studied for in-situ remediation of contaminated soil 43 and ground water. However, little is known about its effects on organisms in soil and aquatic 44 ecosystems. In this study, the effect of nZVI on degradation of DDT and its ecotoxicological effects 45 on collembola (Folsomia candida) and ostracods (Heterocypris incongruens) were investigated. 46Two soils were used in suspension incubation experiments lasting for 7 and 30 days; a spiked (20 47 mg DDT kg -1 ) sandy soil and an aged (>50 yrs) DDT-polluted soil (24 mg DDT kg -1 ). These were 48 incubated with 1 or 10 g nZVI kg -1 , and residual toxicity in soil and the aqueous phase tested using 49 ecotoxicological tests with collembola or ostracods. Generally, addition of either concentration of 50 nZVI to soil led to about 50 % degradation of DDT in spiked soil at the end of 7 and 30 d incubation, 51 while the degradation of DDT was less in aged DDT-polluted soil (24 %). Severe negative effects 52 of nZVI were observed on both test organisms after 7 d incubation, but prolonged incubation led 53 to oxidation of nZVI which reduced its toxic effects on the tested organisms. On the other hand, 54DDT had significant negative effects on collembolan reproduction and ostracod development. We 55 conclude that 1g nZVI kg -1 was efficient for significant DDT degradation in spiked soil, while a 56 higher concentration was necessary for treating aged pollutants in soil. The adverse effects of nZVI 57 on tested organisms seem temporary and reduced after oxidation. 58

The spatial variation in concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface soils in the North China Plain and the influential factors were examined in the present study. High concentrations of the sum of 16 PAHs (∑PAH(16) ) appeared in cities and their surrounding areas. Emissions and soil organic carbon (SOC) content significantly regulated spatial differentiation of PAH contamination in soils in the study area. Compared with emissions, concentrations of individual and total PAHs in soils were more closely controlled by the SOC content. Furthermore, concentrations of PAH species with lower molecular weight (e.g., two- or three-ring) in surface soils were more strongly correlated with the SOC content in comparison with those of higher molecular weight (e.g., five- or six-ring), mainly because of their higher saturated vapor pressure, thus higher mobility. The spatial variation of PAH species in soils in the North China Plain tended to be larger with increasing benzene ring numbers, and the difference in physicochemical properties of PAH species determined their distinct spatial distribution characteristics. The present study highlights the relative importance of emissions and SOC content in spatial variation of PAHs and the dependence of the spatial distribution characteristics of PAH species in surface soils on their physicochemical properties at a regional scale. Results of the present work are helpful for regional risk assessment of the contaminants tested.
