Organochlorine pesticides in canned tuna and sardines on the Serbian market

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the level of organochlorine (OC) pesticides in 57 samples of canned tuna and 31 samples of canned sardines in vegetable oil, collected from supermarkets in Serbia. OC pesticides α-HCH, β-HCH, δ-HCH, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), DDE, DDD, dielderin, endosulfane I, endosulfane II, endosulan sulfate, endrin, endrin ketone, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, aldrin, metoxichlor, cis-chlordane and trans-chlordane were determined using a GS-MS method. The highes… Show more

“…All chemicals and reagents used in this experiment were of analytical grade with high purity. Preparation of sample which was based on extraction with acetonitrile (CAN), (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, USA) in the presence of anhydrous magnesium sulfate (MgSO 4 ) and anhydrous sodium acetate (CH 3 COONa) Merck, Darmstadt, Germany) was performed as described by Kartalović et al (2016). The gas-mass chromatography was Agilent 7890B/5977A MSD and operating conditions were as follow: fused silica column [30 m x 0.25 μm film of HP-5M -thickness]; injection temperature was set at 280°C using the splitiless mode and the volume injected was 4 μL.…”

“…Validation plan included determination of precision, reproducibility, accuracy, linearity, LOQ, LOD and uncertainty (Kartalović et al, 2016). The method precision was evaluated by repeatability using the meat fortified with carbofuran concentrations injected in triplicate (50.0 mg kg -1 , n=20).…”

“…According to Kartalović et al (2016) adapted method of sample preparation for pesticides (OCP), polychlorinated biphenyl's (PCB) and polyciclic aromatic hydrocrbons (PAHs) was used. This modified method was based on the extraction with acetonitrile (ACN, Sigma-Aldrich) in the presence of anhydrous magnesium sulfate (MgSO4; Merck, Darmstadt, Germany) and anhydrous sodium acetate (CH3COONa; Merck, Darmstadt, Germany).…”

“…Such compounds include pharmaceuticals like pentamidine [ 2 ], or fluoxetine (SSRI antidepressant) [ 3 ] or saturated fatty acids palmitate [ 4 ], or stearate [ 5 ], and potentially also organochlorine pollutants, such as the now-banned pesticide DDT [ 6 , 7 ]. Even decades after most countries banned its use, DDT and its metabolites persist in the environment [ 8 , 9 ] and represent a threat to living organisms [ 10 , 11 ]. Nowadays, DDT in human serum/plasma/blood commonly range between 1–500 nM [ 12 , 13 ] with maxima occasionally overcoming 1 μM [ 14 ].…”
