Organo/Zn-Al LDH Nanocomposites for Cationic Dye Removal from Aqueous Media

Abstract: Cationic dye sorption by Zn-Al-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) modified with anionic surfactants was examined using methylene blue (MB) dye as a compound model in aqueous solutions. The modification of Zn-Al LDHs was performed by reconstruction method using dodecyl sulfate anion (DS) solutions. DS contained Zn-Al LDHs were characterized by XRD, FTIR, thermogravimetric, and SEM analysis. The reconstructed organo/Zn-Al LDHs comprise the crystalline phases (DS-intercalated LDHs, hydrotalcite), and the amorphous … Show more

“…The disappeared (001) peaks in LDH‐rGO may be due to the uniformly dispersion of graphene sheets and the very low content of GO. Moreover, compared with pure LDHs, a decrease in the intensity of the (003) reflection peak in LDH‐rGO hybrids shows a disordered layered structure .…”

“…37 The peaks that appeared below 700 cm À1 belonged to M-O bond stretching and brucite lattice bending. 49 Regarding LDH/cefotax, Fig. 2, spectrum b and inset (i) show the appearance of important bands of cefotax in the spectra of the Zn-Al LDH/cefotax composite as follows: stretching of O-H groups appeared at 3456 cm À1 , N-H stretching is shown around 1569 cm À1 , C]O stretching vibration of (COO) 2À at 1852.76 cm À1 , the peaks at 1623, 1494.10, 1367.96, 1032, 772, and 610 cm À1 are due to the presence of C]O of an amide group, N-H, C]O, C-N, C-O, CH 2 , and C-S groups, respectively.…”

“…The results indicate that the organic phase (SDS) greatly increases the affinity of organo/Zn-Al LDHs for MB due to hydrophobic interactions between the surfactants and dye molecules [7].…”

“…The organic phase in the interlayer formed by the intercalated organic ions acted as an adsolubilization medium increasing the affinity of LDHs for organic compounds. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) modified LDHs demonstrated the greatly enhanced sorption of ionizable and nonionic organic contaminants such as pesticides, herbicides, and aromatic hydrocarbons [6,7].…”
