Organizations as Networks of Communication Episodes: Turning the Network Perspective Inside Out

Abstract: Over the last decades, the idea that communication constitutes organizations (CCO) has been gaining considerable momentum in organization studies. The CCO perspective provides new insights into key organizational issues, such as the relation between stability and change, between micro-level and macro-level phenomena, or between emergence and control. However, despite various theoretical advancements, the CCO perspective's range of methodologies is still limited to analyzing local communication episodes, rather… Show more

“…We analyse the characterization of a network's cognitive frame (ties between actors and their cognitions), alongside a more traditional SNA (ties between actors), and supplement this with qualitative data to study the structure and content of social networks. Our mixed-method approach differs from studies seeking to map discrete stages of (Blaschke, Schoeneborn, & Seidl, 2012). Moreover, our focus on a network's cognitive frame can also be distinguished from the study of 'cognitive social structures' based on individuals' perceptions of who is connected to whom (Balkundi & Kilduff, 2006;Krackhardt, 1987).…”

“…Process-centric research at the network level often focuses on interactions (Blaschke et al, 2012), and the pivotal role of agency (Gulati and Srivastava, 2014) and time (Halinen et al, 2012). Networks are discursive constructions in which participants construct meaning (Lowe et al, 2016), 'network pictures' and network strategies (Abrahamsen et al, 2016;Vaara et al, 2004).…”
