Organizational Context, User Involvement, and the Usefulness of Information Systems*

Abstract: This study investigates organizational factors related to user involvement in information system development and perceived system usefulness. Using a sample of 118 usermanagers in 34 companies, the results show that user involvement in design and implementation is related positively to users' perceptions of system usefulness. However, organizational factors were not found to be related significantly to user involvement, as had been originally hypothesized. Rather, organizational factors either had a direct rel… Show more

“…This result is in line with other authors as Franz and Robey (1986), Sorensen and Stuart (2000), Burke et al (2002), Whesthead et al (2005 and Papastathopoulos and Beneki (2010). These works demonstrate how firms with more experience tend to implement more efficient ICT strategies than younger, as does the education level and previous knowledge of those technologies (Bekman et al 1998;Acemoglu 2002;Burke et al 2002).…”

“…In line with this idea, some research have studied certain relationships between the age of the owner (Shih-Yung and Pearson 2011) and the age of the company (Goode and Stevens 2000;Sorensen and Stuart 2000;Chatterjee et al 2002, Balasubramanian andLee 2008) and the use of ICT. From these studies a negative relationship between the age of the entrepreneur is found (Aubert et al 2006;Shih-Yung and Pearson 2011) and the use of ICT and, conversely, a positive relationship between their experience in the market and its use (Franz and Robey 1986;Sorensen and Stuart 2000;Burke et al 2002;Westhead et al 2005;Papastathopoulos and Beneki 2010). Finally, another factor influencing positively the use of ICT is, as noted above, training (Fulantelli and Allegra 2003;Admiraal and Lockhorst 2009;Lee Sang et al 2010).…”

“…Some have also argued that user participation is a right for those whose work lives are affected by a new information system (Hirschheim and Newman, 1991). Yet, the link between participation and system outcomes is unclear (Howcroft and Wilson, 2003) despite significant research attention (c.f., Allingham andO'Connor, 1992, Barki andHuff, 1990;Choe, 1998;Franz and Robey, 1986;Hartwick and Barki, 1994;He and King, 2008). Markus and Mao (2004) conclude that, while participation is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition for system development success, it supports positive development and implementation outcomes.…”

“…Examples for specific subjects include computer science (Adams et al 1992); acceptance of a website (Kamis et al 2008, Yahya et al 2012; Executive Information Systems (Averweg 2008); Enterprise Resource Planning systems (Amoako-Gyampah 2007); 3G mobile services (Suki & Suki 2011); landscape and river basin management (Volk et al 2010); agriculture and farming systems research (Newman et al 2000); river rehabilitation (Hostmann 2005); and information systems and managers' performance (Franz & Robey 1986). The case of forestry has been considered when assessing forest farmers' intention of engaging in online trading (Li et al 2012), forest education tools (Li et al 2011) and DSSs for forest management (Garg et al 2006).…”
